Why do you need Search Engine Optimization?

Why do you need Search Engine Optimization?

I am so convinced about the efficacy of doing search engine optimization for almost any kind of website, that I rarely sit down and ask myself this very question. And well, I haven't asked myself this question...but I did get this question from a prospective client the other day and it has been eating away at me ever since.

I know i shouldn't be emotional about something as seemingly innocuous as getting good rankings in the search engines, but with my need to understand how search engines work, my desire to figure out how they can be used effectively by small and medium businesses (large corporations have whole teams on this kind of thing and still don't get it right) and my seemingly insatiable competitive spirit, I can't help but being a bit passionate about SEO.

Anyway, as I stared down this prospect, I thought to myself, yes, why indeed care about search engine optimization for your business?

While all the craze about the Internet, the web, and the information revolution, is that search engine optimization has become as necessary as having a fax machine, using the telephone, and taking credit cards. It is not only a necessary function for any small or medium sized business, it can and will be a critical and probably dominant marketing sector of this century. I don't exaggerate. Over time, search engines will replace the yellow pages, directory assistance, and most other hard copy forms of information distribution. Why print this information when you can make 2 taps on your iPhone and get the information (or even your 1 cent freebie phone from your local cellular company).

Essentially, search engine optimization is a combination of building your website with the search engines in mind and keeping them happy with new keyword rich content. Building the code so that it can be used effectively by search robots, organizing the navigation, naming the pages, writing the content, optimizing the images, adding some "webmaster" tools like XML site maps, doing some basic submissions, getting backlinks, getting listed in directories, the list goes on...

The bottom line is that for whatever your business niche is; whether it is selling to an international or national audience or selling a product/service/software that is not geographically dependent; or you are just focused on serving your geographic area (for service, retail, or local businesses); your market can be expanded with search engine optimization and if you aren't doing it, your competitors certainly will.

Every day, I find business segments in the search engines that are under-served. Our work with Able Paint and Glass recently demonstrates this. In just a few weeks, we are starting to dominate their local search engine traffic for their website http://www.ablevt.com/. We simply organized the pages, optimized the code on each page, and did some basic submissions and linking. 44 #1 positions for their top keywords on the Big 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN).

Once we add hyperlocal blogging to the mix, we plan on increasing all of these numbers!!

In the end, much like paying your website hosting bill, your yellow page advertising, and your local chamber of commerce dues, paying for ongoing search engine optimization with fresh optimized content and keeping up with the every changing world of search engines systems will be more than necessary.

And ultimately, in my opinion, ongoing dedication to SEO will provide a very lucrative return on investment for your business. If there isn't a return, I would never recommend it!

Stock Options Trading Google Dance - Terry's Tips challenge update

How bizarre. As you may know, I have been challenged to get http://www.terrystips.com/ into the top 10 of Google for the keyword phrase "stock options trading". What you may not know is that we also have another website called http://www.stockoptionsuccess.com/ which promotes a similar product line but offers a 50% affiliate share with all White Paper purchases through the ClickBank network.

Over labor day weekend, the Terry's Tips Clickbank site http://www.stockoptionsuccess.com/ shot up to #5 on Google for our keyword phrase "stock options trading"!! I have been slowly upgrading the content on the Stock Option Success website but on a scale by no means comparable to the 1000 words a week I am adding to the home page of Terry's Tips (through our new newsletter tool). And that website is certainly no more optimized, has fewer inbound links by far, and only a PageRank of 3 opposed to Terry's 4 (down from a 5 a couple of months ago).

So why did this happen?

No idea.

What prompted me to write this blog entry is that by this afternoon, this miraculous result has disappeared! http://www.stockoptionsuccess.com/ now resides 1 place below Terry's Tips for "stock options trading" at position #23.

Barring site maintenance work or upgrades at Google that would show this as a temporary anomaly of some kind, I am not entirely sure what to conclude.

But it does reinforce the theory that search engine optimization is not a one-time effort. Constant vigilance and training is needed to keep your site in and ahead of the game relative to your competition.

Happy surfing.

Stock Options Trading website Terrys Tips Google Bot schedule

Every Monday, we load up a 1000 plus word update to the home page of the Terry’s Tips. What we have learned through our webmaster tools is that the Google bots are visiting the site on Sundays. Therefore, our content doesn’t get updated until a week after we post it.

Therefore, we are going to add a blog to the home page that we will update daily. Between the newsletter content once a week and daily blogs, we hope to “train” Google to visit the site more often and index our content in a more timely fashion.

Just another something to try…training Google is a constant process.

Stock Option vs Stock Options on google - Terry's Tips

Knowing how search engines work is the most basic concept one has to grapple with when considering how to gain position for your business website or blog. For example, Google, the most popular search engine with a suggested 65% of the search engine market, differentiates between the keyword "stock option" and "stock options". The plural version of this keyword phrase is essentially an entirely different keyword except that stock option is actually contained within the keyword phrase stock options and not vice versa.

So as I work toward getting Terry's Tips to the top 10 in Google results for the keyword phrase "stock options trading", the fact that I am working towards getting the plural of this keyword phrase makes a different.

And more strange results are in store. I have currently achieved #17 position for "stock options trading" for Terry's Tips. And in my efforts to get this ranking, I have made Terry's Tips #5 in Google for the keyword phrase stock option. The keyword phrase stock options, we are not even in the top 30.

so where I have succeeded in getting this coveted top 5 position for an even more popular keyword than my goal, i am left a bit confused on how to proceed in my efforts. I will keep plugging away and see what happens.

Able Paint and Glass SEO quirk - Burlington, VT

Similarly to our Stock Options Trading challenge, we have been working with Able Paint and Glass in Burlington, Vermont on their local and national search engine results. We have done a great job getting them locked in on a local level: Most combinations of Burlington, vt glass, Burlington, Vermont windows, doors, carpet, flooring etc, we are in the top 3 (mostly #1) for Local results in Google and are doing fairly well in the regular organic SERPs (search engine results pages).

We were struggling a bit with “Burlington, vt paint” however. We did well with local search on Burlington vt with "paint store" but not just “paint”. This week, we managed to crack the top 15 for “Burlington, vt (or Vermont) paint”. And in another “how did that happen” moment, we are now #15 in Google for Burlington, vt paint but for the GLASS page?? www.ablevt.com/products/glass

We do not know why…

Good news, bad news ... Stock Options trading challenge

We made progress! We have been blogging, posting, and optimizing all week about stock options trading in conjunction with articles written by Dr Terry Allen and Terry’s Tips. Our hope was to move www.terrystips.com up from 22 in Google for “stock options trading” to the top 10. While we are still languishing between position 20 and 22 on Google, we did make progress. The good news (and truly bizarre) is that www.terrystips.com is now #5 in Google for “stock option”, a much more sought after, highly trafficked keyword.

Our goal was to get his site up on Google for stock options trading and we succeeded in getting a much shorter, more competitive keyword…but we don’t know why!

Terry's Tips Newsletter content...trying to get the bots to visit

Well, so far, the fact that we are adding over 1000 words of optimized content to the home page of Terry’s Tips is making no difference. For some reason, we can’t get the search bots to return to the site and index this lovely new content. We are using some of our tools to track search bot activity on the home page and submitting the site wherever we can. Anyone have any great ideas? Anyone want to put a link on their site to our home page? Stock Options Trading Strategy at www.TerrysTips.com .

In fact, we offer a $40 commission to anyone that drives traffic to our site that results in a sale of the Terry's tips white paper.

Email Andrew if you are interested.

"Stock Options Trading" Keyword Challenge UPDATE

So far so good! In just a month, we have moved up from position 248 on Google to number 20 on Google. i hope to get Terry's Tips in the top 10 of Google by the end of the month but that might be pushing. The new newsletter tool which just launched will certainly help with our position as the main top of each article is a discussion of a Stock Options Trading tip of the week!

Terry's Tips adds newsletter tool

As we continue to add valuable content to the home page of Terry's Tips, we are now posting the free weekly newsletter content for our Stock Options Trading Idea of the Week to the home page. We have provided an archive of past issues as well. Each contains a stock options trading tip, a weekly market conditions report, an Overbought/Oversold status report, and a testimonial. With this, we hope to get the search engines to come back and visit at least every 7 days to capture and index this new content.

"Stock Options Trading" Keyword Challenge

My father's online newsletter has a tremendous following. I have helped develop his process, online presence, and most of his search engine optimization strategies from our offices in Vermont. His latest challenge to me is the keyword "stock options trading". While I made him #1 in Google for "stock options strategies", he is languishing down at 174th position on Google for "stock options trading". My goal is to get him into the top 10 of Google. Currently, his home page is lacking content. It has good navigation but no real content to work with. Along with basic content and programming changes, I am adding a newseltter tool that will take his great weekly saturday newseltters and put the most recent articles on teh home page below the navigation. It's great for new visitors to read but will also help Google want to come back to the site and give it good rankings because of all the new relevant content.

Andrew Allen to #1 in Google

I have been having an ongoing battle to be #1 in Google for my name "Andrew Allen". I was languishing in position 86 for a long time. With some strategic page optimization, relevant link building on some partner sites, and some blogging, over the period of 2years, i almost reached my goal of being #1! I got to #3 in Google in May of 2007. See screen shot.

However, after neglecting project for the last year, I have been bouncing around from anywhere between the top 10 in Google and in the 80th position. How strange! Anyway, I am back to trying to keep myself in the top 10. Tonight, I am at position #83. So i will keep you posted.
